Welcome To Song Of The Week

Like you I listen to music ALL THE TIME. I have approximately 12,000 songs on my IPOD and I usually play it on the shuffle setting. It is probably the only way that I would hear a vast majority of different songs.   My wife thinks I am crazy because quite often Tony Bennett follows Black Sabbath or Michael Buble will precede Kelly Clarkson. What really drives her crazy is when my "GLEE" songs come on! Anyway, the point is that I listen to a lot of varied music. I love how the melody or rhythms can take your emotions to a new level. There are songs that calm and sooth me and others that just get me all riled up. Most importantly to me are the words. Over the years (actually starting in 7th grade) I have wanted to write poetry. I have done a little, but honestly I am not very good at it, but some songs find exactly those right words for what I want to say or describe how I am feeling, or frankly just how pissed off I am. They can make me smile, think, and sometimes cry. This page is dedicated to those songs. I am including the lyrics to them so you can follow along as you listen to the song. Click on the music player "play" button. I hope you enjoy these songs as much as I do. If not...start your own damn website!

                          August 4, 2011

There is one very obvious omission from this list so far and I think part of the reason for that is because it is just impossible to make a choice. Have you ever noticed that there isn’t a Greatest Hits album on the market for The Beatles? Every song on every album was ahead of its time, be it musically, lyrically, in composition or structure. Even, Why Don’t We Do It In The Road? was so far ahead of everything put out at that time…and forget about Revolution Number 9!! I chose a song that embraced the softer side, the brilliance of the ballad which is almost evangelical. Follow the lyrics in the simplicity of three little words.... Let It Be.

                          Let It Be

When I find myself in times of trouble, mother Mary comes to me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
And in my hour of darkness she is standing right in front of me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

And when the broken hearted people living in the world agree,
there will be an answer, let it be.
For though they may be parted there is still a chance that they will see,
there will be an answer. let it be.

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be.
Yea, there will be an answer, let it be.
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

And when the night is cloudy, there is still a light, that shines on me,
shine until tomorrow, let it be.
I wake up to the sound of music, mother Mary comes to me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.

Let it be, let it be, let it be yea, let it be.
There will be an answer, let it be.
Let it be, let it be, let it be yea, let it be.
There will be an answer, let it be.

Let it be, let it be, let it be yea, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

                          Some of the  greatest Rock
and Roll bands have had some of their greatest success  with non Rock and Roll
ballads; ie: Kiss with Beth...Aerosmith with  Don't Want To Miss A Thing. But
one of the greatest bands of all time  has the greatest ballad of all time. Sit
back click on the player and  enjoy Led Zeppelin's Stairway To
                          Heaven

                          "Stairway To Heaven"

There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying the stairway to heaven.
When she gets there she knows,
if the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for.
Ooh, ooh, and she's buying the
                          stairway to heaven.

There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure
'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings.
In a tree by the brook, there's a songbird who sings,
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven.
                          Ooh, it makes me wonder,
                          Ooh, it makes me wonder.

There's a feeling I get when I look to the west,
And my spirit is crying for leaving.
In my thoughts I have seen
rings of smoke through the trees,
And the voices of those who stand looking.
                          Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it really makes me wonder.

                          And it's whispered that soon
if we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason.
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter.

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now,
It's just a spring clean for the May queen.
Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on.
                          And it makes me wonder.
                          Aaahhh

Your head is humming and it won't go, in case you don't know,
The piper's calling you to join him,
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow, and did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind.

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul.
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold.
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last.
When all are one and one is all

To be a rock and not to roll.

And she's buying the stairway to
                          heaven.

I have found that there are some artists and some songs that just need no explanation. They are great simply because they are. One such talent is John Mayer and one such song is Dreaming With A Broken Heart. Every human being of any age who has ever been on the losing side of love can relate to this song.

                          "Dreaming With A Broken Heart"

When you're dreaming with a broken heart
The waking up is the hardest part
You roll outta bed and down on your knees
And for the moment you can hardly breathe
                          Wondering was she really here?
Is she standing in my room?
No she's not, 'cause she's gone, gone, gone, gone, gone....

When you're dreaming with a broken heart
The giving up is the hardest part
She takes you in with your crying eyes
Then all at once you have to say goodbye
Wondering could you stay my love?
Will you wake up by my side?
No she can't, 'cause she's gone, gone, gone, gone, gone....

                          Oooooooooohhhhhhhhh

Now do i have to fall asleep with roses in my hand
Do i have to fall asleep with roses in my hand?
Do i have to fall asleep with roses in my hand?
Do i have to fall asleep with roses in my hand?
                           roses in my hand
Baby would you get them if i did?
No you won't, 'cause you're gone, gone, gone, gone, gone....

When you're dreaming with a broken heart
The waking up is the hardest part

                          January 23, 2011
I have found that various artists find their “niche” in the music industry and their writing or tempo or “brand” of music carries them to stardom or failure. There is one female artist out there who has found stardom in really hating men. She is angry in almost all of her songs to the point to where sometimes she sounds like she is screaming. She has a whine and screech to her voice that in any other context would make you want to shiver like when you hear fingernails on a chalkboard, but because of her lyrics and the emotion she puts into every song, that whine works for her. I am talking about Alanis Morissette and her anthem of pain and anger. I think men can relate to what I am saying and women can relate to this song.

                          You Oughta Know

I want you to know, that I am happy for you
I wish nothing but the best for you both
                          An older version of me
                          Is she perverted like me?
Would she go down on you in a theater?
                          Does she speak eloquently
And would she have your baby?
I'm sure she'd make a really excellent mother

'Cause the love that you gave that we made
Wasn't able to make it enough for you
                          To be open wide, No
And every time you speak her name
Does she know how you told me
You'd hold me until you died
Till you died, but you're still alive

And I'm here, to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair, to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
                          You, you, you oughta know

You seem very well, things look peaceful
I'm not quite as well, I thought you should know
Did you forget about me, Mr. Duplicity?
I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner
It was a slap in the face
                          How quickly I was replaced
And are you thinking of me when you fuck her?
                          Ohh... aah... ahh... ahh...

'Cause the love that you gave that we made
Wasn't able to make it enough for you
                          To be open wide, No
And every time you speak her name
Does she know how you told me
You'd hold me until you died
Till you died, but you're still alive

And I'm here, to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair, to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
                          You, you, you oughta know

'Cause the joke that you laid in the bed
That was me and I'm not gonna fade
As soon as you close your eyes, and you know it
And every time I scratch my nails
Down someone else's back I hope you feel it
                          Well, can you feel it?

Well I'm here, to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair, to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
                          You, you, you oughta know

Well I'm here, to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair, to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
                          You, you, you oughta know

There are very few songs that can evoke an emotion from just one word. This is a song of nothing but a string of those single words. Yet, it is done in such a way that the visuals that flash in our brain create such imagery that there is no real explanation necessary in the song itself. I strongly suggest that you listen to this song twice; once for the really well done visual video that I have included and again just to follow along with the lyrics that I have also included. If you find that you have A LOT of time on your hands Google each person or event in the song (highlighted in blue) to see how it shaped our history. Plus it has a killer beat! Enjoy.

This songs seem really pertinent to what is going on in the country right now. We are living in a time of hand outs and bail outs and this feeling of entitlement. It's crap! And this song really sums it  up. Plus if the music itself doesn't make you tap your toes...check your pulse!

                          Get Over It
                          By
                          The Eagles

I turn on the tube and what do I see
A whole lotta people cryin’ ’don’t blame me’
They point their crooked little fingers at everybody else
Spend all their time feelin’ sorry for themselves
Victim of this, victim of that
Your momma’s too thin; and your daddy’s too fat

                          Get over it
                          Get over it
All this whinin’ and cryin’ and pitchin’ a fit
Get over it, get over it

You say you haven’t been the same since you had your little crash
But you might feel better if I gave you some cash
The more I think about it, old billy was right
Let’s kill all the lawyers, kill ’em tonight
You don’t want to work, you want to live like a king
But the big, bad world doesn’t owe you a thing

                          Get over it
                          Get over it
If you don’t want to play, then you might as well split
Get over it, get over it

It’s like going to confession every time I hear you speak
You’re makin’ the most of your losin’ streak
Some call it sick, but I call it weak

You drag it around like a ball and chain
You wallow in the guilt; you wallow in the pain
You wave it like a flag, you wear it like a crown
Got your mind in the gutter, bringin’ everybody down
Bitchin' about the present and blame it on the past
I’d like to find your inner child and kick it’s little ass

                          Get over it
                          Get over it
All this bitchin’ and moanin’ and pitchin’ a fit
Get over it, get over it

                          Get over it
                          Get over it
It’s gotta stop sometime, so why don’t you quit
Get over it, get over it
